TeamMates Seniors for the Win: Sara and Tyrin
On August 5, 2026, rising Northeast seniors Sara and Tyrin reflected on being TeamMates at the annual Kickoff Celebration for mentors.

In her introduction of Sara, mentor Christine Davis remembered her TeamMates training.
“As mentors, we are cautioned in training not to take up the role of provider – no giving gifts or money or jobs. We are the gift, we are told. What isn’t clear at the start, is what a gift the mentee is for each of us.”
Davis has cherished that gift since 6th grade, “being there” with Sara during her journey.
“I continue to be impressed by Sara’s calm, humble drive. I never doubt that her aspirations are lofty and her discipline sufficient to meet them.”
Sara has felt the impact of their partnership from the start.
“I remember when I was confronted with some injustices in my middle school student council. Christine’s words were kind, uplifting and encouraging. I left feeling more confident and ready to stand up for myself.”
Sara credits their conversations with helping her know who she is and what she wants.
“I have gained confidence in my future and in my goals. I know I want to become a pediatric cardiovascular anesthesiologist, and know the path it will take to get me there. I am no longer afraid to speak up and strive to encourage others to do the same.”
Mentor JT Martin introduced his mentee Tyrin with obvious pride.
“In the classroom, on the athletic field, or at work, he never seeks recognition for doing what is expected of him. He quietly puts in the effort and takes pride in getting things done.”
Those actions reflect internal qualities that Martin sees in his mentee.
“Tyrin carries himself with a quiet confidence that others gravitate toward. He has a strong moral compass and treats everyone around him with respect.”
Tyrin talked about how Martin’s encouragement sometimes balanced negative input from others.
“I’ll never forget the time I showed you my highlight video and how I felt when you hyped me up. Some people will jokingly say hurtful things to get a response out of you. Your words have always motivated and inspired me to do better.”
He credits Martin with being his role model.
“I feel like I’m mentally tougher because of you. You showed me that there is always a solution even when it’s hard to find. If I could go back and pick any TeamMate in the whole world, I would choose you every single time.”
