Building Excitement with Habitat for Humanity

Since 1988, Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln has built and repaired over 160 houses, impacting more than 750 men, women, and children. Their focus on affordable housing for families makes them a perfect community service partner for TeamMates Mentoring of Lincoln.

With the help of community volunteers and the new residents themselves, Habitat of Lincoln builds about six new homes per year. Each family contributes at least 400 hours to the build of their new home. They meet with Habitat staff to discuss finances and resources to help build long-term success.

To celebrate the excitement of a family’s new home, Lincoln TeamMates partnered with Habitat of Lincoln to provide keychains for residents’ new keys to a new life. With materials provided by Lincoln TeamMates and a little imagination, TeamMates youth and their mentors created cheerful, congratulatory and touching images and messages to greet Lincoln’s newest homeowners.

In total, matches made over 250 keychains to be given to new homeowners as well as those that have built with Habitat in the past 30 years, the same length of time that TeamMates of Lincoln has served the community.

“This was a truly rewarding project,” said TeamMates Match Support Specialist, Stacey Blizek. “I can imagine the excitement that the new homeowners will feel when they get their keys for the first time and see a message of love from our TeamMates matches.”
