Color Changing Milk Experiment

Connie Hain who mentors at St. Joseph Catholic School submitted this fun and easy science experiment. She shares, “Science is a favorite for my mentee so we did this experiment a couple times.  It was beautiful!”

Supplies Needed:

  • Milk
  • Plate
  • Food Coloring
  • Dish Soap
  • Cotton Swab

Instructions:

Step 1:  Pour enough milk to completely cover the bottom of the plate to a depth of 1/4 inch. Allow the milk to settle before moving on to the next step.

Step 2:  Add one drop of each color of food coloring to the milk. Try to keep the drops close together towards the center of the plate of milk.

Step 3:  Cover one end of the cotton swab with dish soap. Try to predict what will happen when the cotton swab touches the milk. Place the soapy end of the cotton swab in the middle of the milk and hold it there for 10-15 seconds. Do not stir the milk, just hold the cotton swab in the center and watch the colors burst!

Step 4:  Add another drop of dish soap to the cotton swab and try it again. Try placing the swab in different places to see the different effects.
